CTL Announces Upcoming Events, Programs for Faculty

From a new Teaching with Technology Summer Institute to a Teaching Scholars Faculty Learning Community, the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has a variety of upcoming events and programs for faculty to get involved with.

"CTL’s programming is designed to create time and space for faculty to engage with a community of their peers, focusing on specific themes, projects, initiatives, new ideas, old ideas, evidence-based teaching practices, and more,” said Ruth Poproski, assistant director of Faculty Teaching and Learning Initiatives. “Whether it be a practical issue that needs attention or the intellectual curiosity that leads you to question the grounding of various teaching practices, our goal is to help you move forward in your work as educators.”

Read on to find out if one of these opportunities is a fit for you:

  • Teaching with Technology Summer Institute: Painting on the New Canvas. This event will be held July 10-13 and will focus on a pedagogical approach to the integration of technologies into curriculum to support effective teaching and enhance student learning. Registration is open now.
  • Teaching with Technology Partnership. In its second year, this initiative aims to support and promote effective and innovative uses of technology to enhance teaching and learning through collaboration between faculty fellows and the learning technology specialists in CTL. All faculty are eligible, and the deadline to apply is Aug. 6.
  • Course Design Studio. Over the course of four three-hour sessions, this program provides a structured opportunity to design or redesign a course with guidance from CTL consultants and input from colleagues across campus. The studio typically takes place in early June, but due to a variety of scheduling constraints, the 2018 version will be held in mid May. Registration is open now.
  • Teaching Scholars: Teaching as Research. The goal of this faculty learning community is to provide academic professionals and lecturers an opportunity to work on teaching-as-research projects where they will take a scholarly approach to teaching and examine something of interest and value to them. The deadline to apply is June 1.
  • Hesburgh Award Teaching Fellows. Open to tenured professors, this program is designed to bring together mid-career and senior faculty who have demonstrated strength in the classroom and are interested in working on initiatives that further enhance student learning. Nominations will be solicited in June.
  • Class of 1969 Teaching Fellows. This program is designed to gather together an interdisciplinary group of assistant professors for pedagogically focused support and professional development. In addition, these fellows are given access to funds that can be used to support the development of a small project or for other teaching-related resources. The deadline to apply is June 1.
  • Summer Book Club. This summer, the book club will discuss Creating Wicked Students by Paul Hanstedt and will meet on June 15 and 29 from noon to 1 p.m. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch!
  • Fall Teaching Kickoff. This year’s event will be held on Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes a series of interactive workshops aimed at getting faculty and other instructors geared up for the first day of class. Participants may attend all or part of the day. Registration will open in mid July.
